Cold Weather & Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
It’s that time of year where your heater is on and you’re snuggled up in a blanket in front of the TV. But did you know your heater may be a source of carbon monoxide(CO) poisoning? Depending on the source, CO poisoning deaths account for somewhere between 200 and 700 deaths per year in the U.S. and for every death, approximately 5 more people will end up in the hospital with CO related injuries. These types of injuries can include memory loss, learning disabilities and personality changes. Some potential sources of CO poisoning included furnaces, hot water heaters, grills, and gas stoves. If you have a vented appliance that is not vented properly, it can also be a source of CO poisoning. Installing CO detectors can be a lifesaver. Make sure to install a detector in every sleeping area and that it is equipped with an LED indicator that tells you if the device is powered on.
