Happy Halloween
This weekend many people are going to be celebrating Halloween festivities. While this is a good time to relax and have a little fun, adults need to take a few minutes and plan ahead before getting behind the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 48% of all highway fatalities in the nation on Halloween night in 2009 involved a driver or a motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, which is illegal in every state. And in 2008, there were 324 alcohol-related fatalities in Arizona: 34% of all traffic fatalities! The penalties for impaired driving in Arizona are severe and include: mandatory jail time, thousands of dollars in fines and court fees, driver license suspension, vehicle impoundment, and other costs
If you know you are going to a party where alcohol will be served, designate a driver. Or, look up a couple of phone numbers of local cab companies beforehand, program them in your phone and keep spare cash on hand for cab fare. If you see a drunk driver on the road, call your local law enforcement immediately. Don’t take the risk of getting behind the wheel intoxicated, plan ahead and be safe!
